Join the Pack

The other weekend while out on a trail, we can across two women and their five dogs. All five dogs were off leash. We came up from behind and met up with the first dog. As we passed, the dog promptly joined us. As we headed up closer to the two women, they turned to find their dog running in front of my scooter and right behind my dogs.

They were quite surprised and asked all about my little team, before we pushed on ahead passed the other dogs, some of which had already turned around to come see us.

The dog that joined us was a cute little dog. Although it was not husky it would have made a great addition to the team. All their dogs were well behaved and my dogs did not seem to be bothered by them. However, Blizzard did want to turn around to go back to play once we passed them all.

The Crash

We were heading down a trail this weekend. Up ahead I could see a group of people coming down a hill. As we got closer, I saw they had a dog with them. As I made this realization, I also discovered there was a short cut blazed through the tall grass straight between this dog and us.

The little dog saw Blizzard and Flurry. It got excited and started to run straight toward us on its flex leash. Blizzard and Flurry responded with the same excitement and went to take the straight shot to greet this dog. However, I was turning and heading down the correct trail.

I tried to stop them with both brakes on, but it was not enough. I went to step off the scooter to stop, but I realized too late that we were going too fast to step off the scooter. I went from foot to knee on the ground. This was followed quickly by whole body and flying scooter. I told myself, “don’t let go.” Letting go might have been a good thing for me, but not the dogs who would have found they being followed by a flailing scooter. I did not let go. Which meant I falling action was intensified with dog powered speed.

I did some kind of roll once I was on the ground, which caused me to hit the back of my bike helmet on the ground and half crushed my glasses. I got up quickly once the dogs stopped which didn’t take long given all the commotion behind them. I ran the rest of the 3.5-mile run without any problems. However, the next day I discovered just how many muscles and body parts had been involved in the ordeal. I am still sore.

Next time, I’ll stretch first before attempting such acrobatic moves.
